Advanced Screening of Little Fires Everywhere Brings Joy to Natives

Race, class, gender. We all know society doesn't exist without it. In a way, it is what creates the stories of people navigating the spaces they occupy, with uncertainty, with rage and sometimes with opportunity. The conflict that rules can create causes many people to make choices;  good and sometimes bad. In the end, to act is what seems to be most within reason.

On Wednesday, March 11 VIP ticket winners gathered at Silverspot Cinema in Orange Village, Oh for an advanced screening of the first episode of the new Hulu series, Little Fires Everywhere, based on the novel written by Shaker Heights native, Celeste Ng.

Attendees in Shaker Heights and surrounding communities convened to enjoy complimentary concessions, community, and the power of storytelling. Little Fires Everywhere was published in 2017, was a New York Times Best Seller, and winner of the Ohioana Book Award. Celeste Ng's books have been translated in more than thirty languages.

Starring Kerry Washington and Reese Wither-spoon, the Drama miniseries, explores the heaviness of secrets, art, identity and motherhood. Episode one follows the Richardson family's encounter with Artist Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl when they arrive in Shaker Heights, Oh. Unsure of what to make of the elite community, the two embark on a journey to discover what making the best of what you have is really about when femininity becomes a weapon in disguise.

Season one of the tv series is available to stream on Hulu. https://www.hulu.com/series/little-fires-everywhere-bce24897-1a74-48a3-95e8-6cdd530dde4c

Grants For Graduate Students

As a graduate student, I know what it is like to face economic barriers. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming sacrificing the amount of hours you can work in order to attend class and complete field experiences that are unpaid. For this reason, I have developed an interest in looking for funding opportunities. Economics directly impacts student's mental, physical and emotional health. Economics is what drives many students of color like myself to college to begin with.  I hope to one day be part of the solution to this problem. Below are a few resources with tips that may be useful to you or someone you know.
